Mining with GTX 1060

Ok,
So first off, my philosophy is a bit different from others here, maybe most.
SOE is AMD CPUs, Nvidia GPUs and Linux OS - if something doesn't fit into that box I generally don't do it.
Also, I'm lazy (and old) so I usually just get my code from the repos or as debs.

I run 12 cards in 6 rigs (standard cases actually, but I've been the whole crate route in the past.) Currently I'm hitting about 205Mhs and I don't pay for electricity.
5 rigs are in my (small) living room so there's a 10K BTU window air conditioner in there as well.

So I was looking forward to the 1060s and 3 weeks ago I got a pair of MSI 1060 6GB cards and I'm really happy with them.
Reporting 36 Mhs for the pair and averaging 35Mhs as actual.
Stock settings, running ethminer, fans set to 45% and 40%, temps are 55c for each card.

And yesterday I took delivery of 2 Gigabyte 1060 6GB cards to finish my final rig.
Hashrate should be about the same - eventually. Less happy this time.
So I posted a couple of reviews on Newegg.ca which is where all the cards came from and I thought I'd reproduce them here.

Great mining card
08/23/2016

This review is from: MSI GeForce GTX 1060 DirectX 12 GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING 6G 6GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 ATX Video Card
Pros:
Fast , cool
Bang for the buck
Rock solid 18Mhs at stock with Linux and ethminer from repos.

Cons:
Bang for the buck?
Bought 2 of these 21 days ago for $370 CDN each.
Now they are $481 CDN. Up $111 in three weeks??!
Because the gamers love them so much? A card you cannot SLI?
Is it Newegg or MSI? Way to gouge buddy.

2.

1 out of 5 eggs
Worst mining card ever!
08/23/2016

This review is from: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1060 Windforce OC GV-N1060WF2OC-6GD Video Card
Pros:
Short

Cons:
Hot.
So the two I ordered came yesterday - stuck them in a rig, fired it up, fans at 40% otherwise stock settings running ethminer.
5 minutes later the top card is showing 82c at about 105w.
Cranked the fans up to 75% - over 2000rpm - temp drops to about 75c
Turn off fan control and undervolted to 80 watts - temps are now in the 70s, no loss of hashrate, fans are at about 50%.
Undervolt to 70 watts - yes! 70WATTS- now the temps are at 68C - which is about the same as the power draw, hashrate drops 3Mhs.
So I have a card which actually produces 1 degree c of heat for every watt of power it uses. WOW!
Of the 12 Nvidia cards that I run the next hottest is a 980 classy at 59c, and that sits right on top of a 980ti.

Other Thoughts:
Hot.
Really hot.
Really, really hot.
Like a pizza oven.
Buy one of these for Xmas - give it to someone you hate.
My only air-cooled 980ti runs at 53c and it's pulling 150w+.
This is NOT a qc issue, this is by design - shoddy design and a fu attitude.
I have 2 Gigabyte 970 triple fan cards - they have been running 24/7 for over 9 months. Zero problems.
Now this.
No refunds, no exchanges, RMA for two more of the same. Cost of shipping, loss of use.
Just have to wait until the fans burn out - which they will. Then RMA and sell the new cards to a gamer.
And add Gigabyte to my shitlist.

*********
So, those are the reviews
Here's some proof -

OK, so I had to sit and wait a bit for the wattage to fluctuate to get that exact match.

GX 850 not performing on ubuntu 16.04

Hey everybody. I'm new to this, so I apologize if I've missed something basic here

I just set up my first "rig," which is really a test using a tower I've had for a few years. I picked up a couple of these locally and got them set up. Wasn't too hard to get them going but they're only doing about 21 MH/s each and I can't figure out why. I was expecting them to be above 25 MH/s, and closer to 30.

I'm running ubuntu 16.04.2 with kernel 4.8.0-53. amdgpu-pro 17.10 is installed and working as far as I can tell.

Poking around in the driver files in /sys/class/card0/device, I find:
root@newton:/sys/class/drm/card0/device# cat pp_dpm_mclk 0: 300Mhz 1: 1000Mhz 2: 2000Mhz * root@newton:/sys/class/drm/card0/device# cat pp_dpm_sclk 0: 300Mhz 1: 600Mhz 2: 900Mhz 3: 1145Mhz 4: 1215Mhz 5: 1300Mhz 6: 1355Mhz 7: 1405Mhz *

When I try to modify the pp_mclk_od and pp_sclk_od, I get these messages in journalctl and no change in performance:
May 29 09:27:12 newton kernel: amdgpu: [powerplay] VDDCI is larger than max VDDCI in VDDCI Voltage Table! May 29 09:27:12 newton kernel: amdgpu: [powerplay] failed to send message 18a ret is 0 May 29 09:27:13 newton kernel: amdgpu: [powerplay] failed to send pre message 145 ret is 0 May 29 09:27:13 newton kernel: amdgpu: [powerplay] failed to send pre message 146 ret is 0 May 29 09:27:14 newton kernel: amdgpu: [powerplay] failed to send message 146 ret is 0

After this, if I look at the pp_dpm_mclk and sclk files again, this is what I see:
root@newton:/sys/class/drm/card0/device# cat pp_dpm_mclk 0: 300Mhz * 1: 1000Mhz 2: 2000Mhz root@newton:/sys/class/drm/card0/device# cat pp_dpm_sclk 0: 300Mhz * 1: 600Mhz 2: 900Mhz 3: 1145Mhz 4: 1215Mhz 5: 1300Mhz 6: 1355Mhz 7: 1419Mhz root@newton:/sys/class/drm/card0/device#
Although, given that there's no change in performance, I think the driver has lost its mind. The only way to recover the driver from here seems to be a reboot.

Has anybody seen this specific problem before?

What do I need to do to get these cards up to expected speeds?

[UPDATE]RX480 (Reference) Custom rom: 31+Mh

VDDC Offset + Basic Custom timing
------------------
Here's a nice update for those who have Reference cards.
In the package included, i've put 4 roms with VDDC offset.

1. -50mV
2. -69mV
3. -81mV
4. -100mV

You can of course adjust these however you want, if you want to have an even tighter undervolt you can search the rom for this --> "8D 00 F8(-50)00" and replace the F8 part with EE(-112) for example.

These roms also have a custom timing included. It's a basic one but it will give you a very high increase for XMR.

Greetings and have fun!

Open for discussions in here though

Short overview:

Results.

First run (no mod): 24Mh+ : Core clock 1275, Mem Clock 2000
https://s10.postimg.org/4rbj8v2m1/Stock_Test_Run.png

Second run (modded): 28Mh : Same clocks, so: 1275, 2000
https://s9.postimg.org/byc2sahgf/mem_Edit_Testrun1.png

Next run (still modded): 30.5 - 31Mh : Lowered core to 1192 and raised memory to the (for now) max of 2250.
https://s9.postimg.org/4azgwfo27/mem_Edit_Testrun_Final.png

Then, for my final(for now) run: 31.5-32Mh : Raised core to 1220 and raised memory to 2275
https://s10.postimg.org/vqo4i0m2x/mem_Edit_Testrun_Final2.png

Will be doing more tests later, i'm sure i'll be able to go over 32Mh.
Great thing about this, when i ran the first testrun with stock clocks, card was at around 60 degrees and no abnormal fan speed.

Overall, awesome card Smiley

Power usage tests will follow later when i'm done tweaking my rom to the sweet spot Smiley

Flashing BIOS of Sapphire Rx 470 NITRO (not +) 4gb - Elpida

Dear community! I have great news for you!! Finally (after hours, days, almost weeks... of suffering looking for a way to flash the Bios of this model of GPU) I got the link that will work for flashing the Bios, and the rest is just a matter of following the traditional procedures to flash a memory through ATIWinFlash. I have pair of the GPUs describe in the title of this post. I have been mining Ether with them, with no OCing they can do 22Mh/s. After OCing with Afterburner (Core Clock 1050, Mem. Clock 1920) each GPU was making 24Mh/s. After the flash, they started making 25Mh/s without OCing, and 27Mh/s OCing with the same numbers I used previously. I tried tweaking the Afterburner in order to get better results but it turned very unstable. I'm trying to find out the reason why I can't assign a higher speed to the Mem. Clock without getting a blue screen. I would like to know if the system's RAM or CPU might have something to do with this issue, but that will be my next research (unless any kind soul can explain me the reason of this hehe...)

This is the link to find not only the Bios for the Sapphire Rx 470 Nitro (not +) 4gb (elpida), but for many other GPU models aswell: https://anorak.tech/t/anoraks-vbios-collection-optimized-settings-for-performance-power-saving/13/3

You just have to sign in (if you don't have an account) for free, and then you're free to download the one you need. I used the one that says "hynix elpida memshift." but there are other options for low energy cons, and OCed. I followed the procedures in this video: image and all worked just fine. I have the Crimson 16.9.1, Polaris 1.4, and ATIWinFlash 2.7.4.

Good luck and Good Flash!

If you have any other question, feel free to comment. Also your results if you try this.

SOLVING PCIE riser not working

Hello guys just a tip for those who have issues with USB pcie risers.
I've been trying for hours to get my mobo to accept an r9 290 and a hd 7970 without any success. I tried to change pcie settings in the bios too but nothing changed.
Finally i realized that i simply had to connect the gpus to 16x slots (the others just won't work with the risers) and to restart my computer once (or twice) for the gpu's to be recognized by the mobo. Hope it'll help some of you guys.

Hello there,

I've been mining for a couple of months now with a R9 290 Tri X (OC by manufacturer) at GPU clock 1000 and Memory clock 1300 . I'm mining at 28.2 Mh/s but
I wanna Overclock it a little bit more and i cannot find how.
I tried to boost the Clock speed and the Memory speed but my hashrate wouldnt move. Is there any parameters to change in order to gain some mhs? I've seen some thread talking about 31 mhs.....

Hi guys,
I have a bit of a problem. Yesterday I bought a rig from a friend and it seems he couldn't run a 6th gpu...that was strange and i thought I could fix it... It seems that whenever i put a gpu on the x16 slot the fans of that card don't work. I've connected the monitor to that card but nothing happens...I changed gen 2...gen 1...nothing again...i tried changing raiser cards....still no luck..I tried that card on another pc and it works fine... when it was there i also changed the drivers, so that all drivers match...still nothing... Can I conclude that this board is just faulty ? The h81 is rev 2.0 and version C2 if I remember correctly. Is that anything I could do ?

Hi guys,

Building a small farm with 6 motherboards,

one of the boards is the Asrock Z270 Killer SLI, now the issue im posting this is as follows

Connecter 6 gpu, ( gtx 1060 OC ) set the pci-e settings to gen1 , gen2 and gen 3. no matter what booting to the os the device manager only detects 5 gpu ( one of the 5 has code 12 not enough recourses to run device ) most will say psu but i have the same psu on another rig running 6 cards no problems.

not only does gpu 5 have code 12, also the 6th wont show ( bios does not show option to enable above 4g encoded or i cant find it ).

Any one having experience with this motherboard.

help appreciated by me and anyone having this motherboard :)

Motherboard Bios Has Limited Settings? (4g, Gen 1 missing) 5th Card Troubleshooting

$

Hello, I tried looking through past posts here and at ethermining on reddit, and I googled like crazy but I'm stumped. Do some motherboards not have the option to adjust PCIe to gen 1 and to enable 4g encoding? I have a Gigabyte 970a-DS3P. Ive looked all through the bios menus and don't see anything. Am I looking for something that's not available or am I missing something? Updated mobo bios but still didn't see it as an option.

I've been running 4 GPUs on a GA-970A-DS3P motherboard for a couple of weeks and and I'm now trying to get a 5th card running. I understand that enabling 4g encoding and adjusting the PCIe typically fix this but it doesn't seem like I can

Thanks for reading and for any insights. I'm sorry if there is an obvious fix but I've looked all over the web and my MoBo bios with no luck.
