I'm relatively new to mining and pretty much up to this point I've been running everything stock letting ethminer do it's thing. I dont have a good understanding of whats happening with computers on a hardware level which is the source of most of my questions.
Now my GTX 970 was putting out ~20MH/s stock. I overclocked my 970 and it was stable @ 1519MHz core 3505MHz memory so i started mining. Running ethminer with the OC I get the same hashrate. I spent a lot of time getting the max out of this card and the hashrate bummed me out. Even 21-22MH/s would have given me the feeling of success. I'm running with an old i5 2500k, is it bottle necking the GPU?
If not, then whats the problem? Also, this leads to another question I have and it's how much CPU power do you actually need? Would under clocking the CPU be a viable way to cut down on power or is it going to hinder GPU hashrates?
Lastly, the elephant in the room; RX470 & 480s. Modded these things are a beast but the prices I'm seeing people pay for a used cards that could go bad anyday is absurd. I have a line up on a 480, and as long as it doesn't go bad in a month I could recoup my money and some. So it is very temping. Should I take it? I am thinking the rx480 and 970 would be a decent starter gig based on my math.
Bonus question: Will I get more hashrate out of my 970 if my display is switched to onboard video?
