Hi guys,
I've been lurking around for a few months and decided to delve into mining some Ether. I collected various RX470s and RX480s while they were on sale and Google'd/searched the forums in search of mods to get as high of a MH as possible but at the lowest watts (managing heat is huge in my setup). In my ventures...I've come to find that some cards (reference) perform remarkably with undervolting...and some cards (aftermarket) hardly save any energy.
One thing that's been bothering the hell out of me is the VRM wattage. On most of my ref cards it's hovering around 40-50 watts. On my MSI RX470 Armor (4GB Samsung) for example, the VRMs hit 75 watts, the voltage is set to .880v...on my ASUS STRIX RX480 (8GB Samsung) the VRM watts are also at 75W, the voltage is set to .920v but HWINFO currently shows .907v at 100% load while mining. What the hell? Why are the aftermarket cards using THIRTY more watts @ the VRM than ref with similar undervolts?! Are these aftermarket VRMs/boards just garbage when it comes to attempting to undervolt to save a significant amount of watts? There's no way I'm able to push the undervolts more on these aftermarket cards...
