There are a few forums posts about getting 6 GPUs on the Z170A. The MSI Z170A Pro Carbon can even do 7.
I was able to modify the bios using the directions found here:
http://mining-hardware.weebly.com/blog/msi-z170a-with-skylake-cpu-bios-mod-tolud-6-gpu-success-step-by-step
Using this bios mod solved so many of my problems, and I have 6x GPU running stable for over 48 hours.
There is a M.2 slot and I purchased a M.2 to PCIe adapter on Amazon. Windows is able to see all 7 cards, but it says there are not enough resources to run all 7 (error 12).
I have tried to modify the bios further to see if I can lower the M.2 speed as well, but I cannot seem to find anything with M.2 speed settings. Has anyone had luck getting 7 cards to run on this motherboard?
I can share my motherboard bios if anyone is interested, but the directions on the link above make it very easy.
