Issue with multiple gpus?

I'm using the amd 990fx killer fatal1ty. When I have 2 connected, it works, but trying to connect a third one leads to a black screen. It doesn't seem to post, and I have to cmos reset to get it working again (with 2).

I've tested this with 2 motherboards and it doesn't work on either. Am I missing something significant here?
