Is the GDDR5X the problem in the 1080?

Hey guys,

I am comparing 1070 and 1080 here and trying to understand why 1080 is not performing better.

For eth mining, the memory clock speed is what counts, is that correct? If this is right, here's the information for a MSI board:

1797 MHz / 1607 MHz / 8108 MHz (OC Mode)
1771 MHz / 1582 MHz / 8010 MHz (Gaming Mode)
1683 MHz / 1506 MHz / 8010 MHz (Silent Mode)
8192 MB GDDR5

1080
Boost Clock / Base Clock / Memory Frequency
1847 MHz / 1708 MHz / 10108 MHz (OC Mode)
1822 MHz / 1683 MHz / 10010 MHz (Gaming Mode)
1733 MHz / 1607 MHz / 10010 MHz (Silent Mode)
8192 MB GDDR5X

The 1080 is fairly faster (memory wise) but it's GDDR5X instead of GDDR5. To be honest I don't know the difference between both.


Would that be it?
